The anti-estrogen tamoxifen has been on the market for more than a century and has been used by millions of women for decades to treat a variety of reproductive disorders.
Although tamoxifen and the nonsteroidal anti-estrogens, clomiphene, are not approved for use in humans, there is evidence that tamoxifen can have serious side effects. For instance, one in ten women over the age of 35 who took clomiphene experienced an increase in ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, which was considered a serious adverse reaction.
Clomiphene, which is sold under the brand name Clomid, has been on the market for more than a century and has been used by millions of women for decades to treat a variety of reproductive disorders.
One of the most frequently cited side effects of tamoxifen is ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), which is a life-threatening condition that can be life-threatening in some women. OHSSS can occur without warning and may even require immediate medical attention. Women who are exposed to tamoxifen have a higher risk of developing OHSS. Women who are exposed to tamoxifen should immediately seek medical attention if they experience OHSS.
Women who have used tamoxifen for more than 10 years, or who have experienced any adverse effects after taking tamoxifen, are at a significantly increased risk of developing ovarian cancer, high blood pressure and heart disease. Tamoxifen can increase the risk of developing ovarian cancer, high blood pressure and heart disease in certain women, and can also increase the risk of endometrial hyperplasia in certain women. There are currently no clinical trials to determine the long-term effects of tamoxifen use in women who are at increased risk of developing ovarian cancer. A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in January 2019 found that women who were exposed to tamoxifen in the first trimester of pregnancy were at a slightly higher risk of developing cancer than women who had never taken tamoxifen.
In a 2017 study in the Journal of the American Medical Association, researchers found that women who had taken tamoxifen for more than 10 years had a 3.8 times higher risk of developing ovarian cancer compared to women who had not taken tamoxifen. This study suggested that women who have used tamoxifen in the first trimester of pregnancy are at a slightly increased risk of ovarian cancer.
